July Verse of the Month
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.1 Corinthians 10:13, ESV
Pastor Phil’s Call Announcement
It has been seven years that I have served as pastor of Good Shepherd. That is more than a third of my 20 years in ministry. We have been through good times and difficult times as well. I have been blessed to be a part of the significant milestones of baptisms, confirmations, of weddings, and of funerals. You are more than “like family,” you are family.
What a crazy time we have been through these last few months. It has been a time of great anxiety and uncertainty. To make this time even more uncertain, I received not just one, but two Calls to two amazing churches – Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Springfield, VA and to Peace Lutheran Church in Hurst, TX.
I had shared with you last month that I had returned the Call to Prince of Peace in Virginia. But I have continued to consider the Call to Peace Lutheran in Texas. I appreciate so much all of you who have reached out to share words of encouragement and of prayer. And I wanted to let you know that today, I have made a decision and wanted to share that with you.
Everything is temporary. And there will come a day when I will no longer serve as pastor of Good Shepherd, but today is not that day. I informed the Call Committee at Peace earlier this week of my intention to return their Call. What that means is that I plan to continue to serve as your pastor as God continues to direct.
We have work to do here together. I look forward to continuing our partnership in the gospel. I shared with a few people at the beginning of this that while a Call can produce a great sense of uncertainty in the short term, it can also affirm the work we are already doing.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your pastor. I am blessed. We are blessed. And I pray that God is glorified.
Online Worship for July 5, 2020
Worship begins this morning at 10am. We will stream live on Facebook and Youtube. We continue our message series on the Lord’s Prayer. This week we look at the Third Petition which is “Your will be done.”
If you are worshipping online, make sure to share a comment on our live feed on Facebook or YouTube to let us know you are with us! If you miss one of our live stream worship services, they are archived at gs4nj.org/virtual-worship.
We offer the opportunity to participate together with us in the Lord’s Supper during our online worship. We invite you to join us if you share our beliefs and have been instructed in those beliefs. If you plan to participate, make sure to have bread and wine prepared before worship begins.

Congratulations to Jeff Campbell
We want to congratulate Jeff Campbell on being accepted to the Specific Ministry Pastor (SMP) Program at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis to become a Pastor in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. Jeff will start the distance learning program this coming Fall. As part of this program, it will be our intention to call Jeff as a vicar of Good Shepherd. After he completes two years of coursework, he will then be eligible for ordination.
We are so excited to join Jeff and this journey. And our prayer is that God would guide Jeff in this journey to serve the Lord’s Church.
