August Verse of the Month
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”Matthew 16:24-25, ESV
Worship for August 23, 2020
Worship begins this morning at 10am. We will stream live on Facebook and Youtube beginning at 9:43am. If you are worshipping online, make sure to share a comment on our live feed to let us know you are with us! If you miss one of our live stream worship services, they are archived at gs4nj.org/virtual-worship.
Today’s message is “Questions for Life: Who is Jesus.” We may have questions for God, but as we read the Scriptures we are confronted with the questions that God has of us? Today we look at the most important question we will ever answer. That question is “who is Jesus?”
Because of current restrictions caused by the pandemic, we are requiring everyone to make a reservation before attending in-person worship. Reservations are now available through September 13. Please note that reservations close each week at the end of the day on Thursday. Reservations are first-come, first-served as we are limited to 75 people in worship. If you are not one of the first 75 people to make a reservation, you will be able to put your name on a waiting list.
Everyone who attends will be required to:
- Wear a mask at all times – please bring your own. Masks will not be provided.
- Maintain social distancing – pews will be marked. Ushers will direct you to your assigned seats.
- Use hand sanitizer as needed.
Please note that there will be no childcare provided during the service.
Help Us Update Our Steaming Capabilities
We would like to upgrade our streaming capabilities to improve the worship experience for all who are watching online and in-person. It will also be easier to operate for our volunteers. The initial purchase would include two new cameras and a video switcher. However, this is just the beginning and there are additional upgrades that will be necessary in the near future. Ideally, we would like to soon add a third camera to the mix and there are issues we need to address with lighting and sound. But we believe that this will be a good start to the process of upgrading. The specific items we would like to purchase include:
We can make the most basic upgrades for $3000, but $4500 would allow us to purchase the upgraded equipment in the list above that would ultimately serve us better. We ask for your generosity to help us make these purchases through a gift that would be over & above your regular tithe. Unfortunately, video equipment is hard to attain at this time because of supply issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. But once we raise the funds, we can begin the effort to acquire the right equipment. To donate to this special project, you can click on the button below.
Serve on Our AV Team
If you would like to help out with this new equipment, our AV team is in need of additional volunteers to help with our live streaming efforts. We are in special need of individuals who would be willing to be cross-trained in operating both sound and video equipment. This is ministry is vitally important in helping us to continue to minister to those who are unable to worship in-person with us. We thank you for your consideration in serving in this important kingdom endeavor. For more information, contact Pastor Phil at email@example.com.
Jeff Campbell Placement and Installation
Jeff Campbell has been accepted to the Specific Ministry Pastor (SMP) Program at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. This Fall he will begin a four-year remote learning program that will culminate with him being ordained as a Pastor in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. During the first two years of the program, he will serve as a vicar (a fancy word for intern) at Good Shepherd.
A placement service at Concordia Seminary will take place Friday, August 28 at 11 am (please note the time change from announcement last week) when Jeff’s placement will be officially announced. This service will be streamed online if you would like to watch it. We will also put this service on the screens in our sanctuary if you would like to watch it together with us.
We have also scheduled to install Jeff as our vicar on Sunday, September 13 during our worship.
Leadership Pipeline Training
Good Shepherd will be participating in the Leadership Pipeline Training sponsored by the Kairos Network of the New Jersey District. We are participating in this training to help us better develop leaders to accomplish the work God has given us to do. This training begins on August 26 and will take place remotely via zoom. If you would like to participate in this training, please contact Pastor Phil at firstname.lastname@example.org.

September Voters’ Meeting
Our Spring Voters’ Meeting was postponed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The purpose of that meeting was to approve the budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Since the meeting was not held, the Admin Board produced an “emergency budget” that we have been operating off of for the last few months. We have rescheduled that voters’ meeting, to approve the budget, for Sunday, September 27, following worship.
Because this meeting will be held in close proximity to when our Fall Voters’ meeting would be held, we will be combining the business from both the Spring and Fall Voters’ Meeting. What this means is that we will not only be approving the budget, we will also be electing members for our Admin Board. We have 3 positions on the Board that will be up for election this year. Therefore, we are now taking nominations for the Board. If you have someone who you believe would serve well on the Board or you have an interest in serving yourself, you can submit a nomination to firstname.lastname@example.org or 732-679-8883.
The voters’ meeting will be held in-person, but we will also be giving everyone the opportunity to participate online via Zoom. Everyone who attends in-person or online will be required to register beforehand. Registrations will be available at the beginning of September.
Confirmation & First Communion
Both Confirmation and First Communion were postponed because of the Covid-19 Pandemic. We have rescheduled both of those events and Confirmation will take place at 1pm and First Communion will be held at 3pm on Sunday, September 20.
September Church Picnic Canceled
It has been a tradition the last few years, to host a church picnic on the first Sunday after Labor Day. But because of the ongoing pandemic, the church picnic will be canceled this year.
