Ash Wednesday worship will be held at Good Shepherd on Wednesday, February 10 at 7 PM. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the 40 day season of Lent. We hope you can join us as we enter into this holy season.
Lent is the 40 period (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter. Lent marks a somber time in the church year where we reflect upon the great sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf along with our sinfulness before God. We ponder the great lengths to which Jesus went because of his love for us.
In Biblical times, people who mourned would often put on “sack clothes and ashes.” These were symbols of sorrow. During the Ash Wednesday worship, worshipers are invited to come and receive the sign of the cross marked upon their foreheads with ashes. The ashes point us to the sorrow that sin causes. It also points us to our own mortality. As we receive the mark of the ashes we are reminded that we were formed from the dust of the earth and it is to the dust of the earth we shall return. Jesus died to save us from the consequence of our sin.
